PHUKET: Lifeguards on the holiday island of Phuket, desperate to keep tourists out of the dangerous monsoon surf, received reinforcements today from Nature - the ugly stinging bluebottle.
Bluebottles were seen at Surin beach on the west coast, which means it's probably only a matter of time before they also are found further south at Patong, Kamala, Karon, kata and Nai Harn.
While the bluebottles are not deadly, they can sting.
Lifeguards at Patong beach were complaining earlier today that Chinese tourists were ignoring red flags to frolic in the dangerous surf at their peril.
Many groups of tourists from China come from regions where there are no beaches, so unless tour guides or resort managements explain the dangers to them, there is no awareness of whether the conditions are normal or perilous.
