CommentsComments have been disabled for this article. You seem to know absolutely nothing about the meaning of this festival Herbert. It may seem stupid to you, but to many people it is an event to look forward to every year. Perhaps it has become too commercialized since before the foreigners came to moan about everything but you probably have some equally 'stupid' festivals held annually in your own country. Posted by Mac on September 27, 2014 20:23 I will always try to be respectful of other cultures but I never want to see this type of piercing. In the past I have enjoyed the food and cultural activities during this festival I just do not like piercings. Posted by Arthur on September 28, 2014 07:21 what a brain dead idiot! And anyone who likes to see people mutilating themselves must also be an idiot (Mac) i suppose you like burning at the stake bear baiting just because backward people dont have the brain development to know any better? If you like it so much Mac why dont you try putting the piercings in yourself? I know just the place you can put them! Posted by Mr Wolf on September 28, 2014 08:30 Editor Comment: Too much heat and abuse, Mr Wolf, which indicates a need for peace and tranquility. Some people brought up in strict cultures have difficulty understanding and accepting other cultures. Animal cruelty is quite different from and not a part of the Vegetarian Festival. I hope they would not mutilate or harm other people than themselves, but who knows ? The ultimate in bad taste. Posted by Mig on September 28, 2014 09:10 Editor Comment: What do you mean, ''Who knows?'' It's a non-violent festival in which adherents endure pain to relieve the world of its problems. Perhaps knowing what you are writing about is not one of your skills. Now that's really bad taste. I mean that the mental balance of these individuals is not guaranteed by the fact that the event is socially admitted as a ritual to relieve the world. Posted by Mig on September 28, 2014 09:34 On popping in to a local shop last year, there were a display of local newspapers with photos of the self mutilation show which has replaced the original 'single skewer'. The Thai owner couldn't bear to look at them. He told me it had become a disgusting money making tourist attraction and should be stopped. He also told me between 3 or 4 of these young guys die every year. A fact not widely shared ... Posted by jonty on September 28, 2014 09:59 Editor Comment: A fact not widely shared because it's not true, jonty. If you believe what one local shopkeeper has to say, you are in the ''exceedingly gullible'' category. If you are offered the Sarasin Bridge at an extremely low price, don't buy it. What a big brain you have Mr. Wolf! Posted by Mac on September 28, 2014 20:05 Jeez, what a great bunch of expats we have living here now. Don't like it,go home!!! It's part of Phuket's history and should be shown to the world. It's an amazing atmosphere in Town during these 9 days but how many of you doomsdayers have actually been to experience it? Warriors ? Self-mutilation is hardly a sign of bravery. More like utter stupidity and attention seeking. By all means, knock yourselves out.
