The (obscured) underage boys with the weapon they pointed at a Phuket motorist

Two Bike Boys Arrested Over Road Rage Gun Pointing on Phuket

Tuesday, October 27, 2015
PHUKET: Police have arrested two youths who pointed a gun at a Phuket motorist in a road rage incident captured on a camera yesterday.

One boy aged 17, who pointed the gun about noon yesterday in Phuket City's bypass road, was arrested in Kathu while the 15-year-old rider was nabbed in Phuket City.

It's illegal to display images of them because they are minors.

The two boys both had priors with the police over drugs, Phuket City police said today.

The 17-year-old told police he pointed the gun because the car cut them off in a narrow stretch of road alongside the Tesco Lotus intersection underpass.

A fifth young man has also been arrested over the gun killing of a 15-year-old on the final night of the Vegetarian Festival in Phuket City early on Thursday morning.

Where do youths seem to be able to get such a ready supply of guns when they are supposed to be illegal in Thailand?

Criminals I could understand but youths!

As per the comments around the Veg Festival shooting, there is a rising underbelly of horrible little oiks who are extremely violent in Phuket. The parents should be doing a better job!

Gun laws are extremely liberal in Thailand, think Texas and you're in the ballpark. Who told guns are illegal in Thailand? Everybody I know have hand guns or even assault rifles at home.

what you have decsribed in de facto situation on the ground.
and legal situation is just opposite - as often happens here because of profound non-enforcement of laws:

1. Gun posession in Thailand is privilege like in Europe, not a right like in US: one has to apply for license , and should provide a reason why he want to possess a gun -self-defense, protection of property, sports or hunting, requirement to obtain a license covers even storing of damaged guns: a separate license for every gun. Keeping a gun without license is punishable up to 10yrs term.

2. In addition, extra license is necessary for carrying a concealed weapon - for bringing it into a city or public area.

3. It is illegal to store an ammunition that doesn't match your licensed gun.

@ Christian

It is my understanding that it's not possible for a foreigner to get a gun permit in Thailand. I don't know if permits here specify a concealed weapon carry permit either.

Do you have better info on this ?

Yes, guns are generally for thai citizens only.

Sue

Yes, people need a license. Everybody I know that have guns also have licenses. Getting a license is routine and very easy. Anybody and everybody (thai citizens) can claim they want it for self defence or protection of property. So, what's your point? Logic seemed to think guns are banned and hard/impossible to own in Thailand, which is very far from the truth. Gun ownership is widespread, easy and legal
