National Council for Peace and Order Statement following the Ratchaprasong Incident
27 August 2015
An Update on the Situation
We are very pleased that the World Tourism Organisation has commended the Thai government and the private sector for the quick and efficient response to the incidents. The Organisation is said to be confident that Thailand is still a great place to come for leisure.
Work undertaken by relevant agencies
With regards to the investigation, relevant personnel have continued with their work with great devotion. However, we cannot confirm the motives and those behind the incidents. This is to allow for all aspects to be thoroughly, properly and carefully scrutinised.
Assistance for the Injured and Deceased
Yesterday, the Ministry of Tourism and Sports held a meeting with related agencies, to consider adjusting the compensation rate for those who were injured and the deceased from the Ratchaprasong incident, so that it is more suitable for present conditions.
At the preliminary stage, the meeting concluded that information on compensation rates of various countries should be taken into consideration.
Most importantly, assistance should be provided to the injured, and family of the deceased, quickly and suitably, under the Law. The Meeting will convene again on Friday.
As for the progress on the assistance provided to the families of the 20 deceased, at present, seven related agencies are involved. These are the Department of Rights and Liberty, Ministry of Justice, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, the Association of Thai Travel Agents, and royal funds kindly granted by His Majesty the King.
The families of the 20 deceased have been contacted to come and collect the compensation.
Public Cooperation
The general public has expressed their continued interest in the incidents. At the same time, there have been various opinions and discussions both Thai and foreign with regards to the incidents.
Publications in the forms of flow charts as well as re-enactment animation have been made. Such information is usually produced based on personal opinions and individual researches which may lack references leading to misleading perception and misunderstanding among the general public.
Therefore, we would like to ask the general public to follow the information provided by the government agencies.
