Blue pipes, natural environment: Racha island still needs fixing

Backhoe and Pump May Not Answer All of Racha's Pollution Problems

Sunday, March 8, 2015
PHUKET: A backhoe and a pump are now being deployed to help end seven years of environmental pollution on Racha island, a popular resort destination not far from Phuket.

The backhoe will dig out a stagnant canal while the pump will be used to carry bad water over an illegally built resort roadway.

Why aren't the Phuket authorities ordering the roadway to be demolished?

Well that's a good question, one that has been asked for a long time by Sarit Jandee, president of the Racha Island Preservation Committee.

''More tourists are coming to Racha and it would be good to see local government and businesspeople show their ability to improve the environment,'' he said.

Vice Governor Suthee Tongyam led a delegation of officials to Racha yesterday. The Phuket Marine Biological centre, Phuket Marine Office 5, the Fisheries Office and Royal Thai Navy were represented.

It's been seven years since the issue was first raised yet the environmental destruction continues, the group was told.

Khun Sarit said that restaurants and resorts that pollute the 700-metre canal need to treat all waste before it reaches the canal.

No effort appears to be underway to remove the illegal resort roadway, one of several major encroachments.

The backhoe is expected to spend 10 days working on the canal.

Good point Mr. Balonus, and yes, it is way beyond a backhoe. It is worse than utter neglect, it is complete disregard for the natural environment. Many, if not most resort developers couldn't care less about anything other than getting their crappy projects built as fast and cheap as possible, and at any cost to the natural environment, then moving on. A major issue is also the first part of the construction process, that being the laying of blue lines to take whatever wastewater away and discharge it to the nearest creek, pond or beach...it doesn't matter. Not only does this resort deserve the nasty marks on Trip Advisor for the festering pollution it has caused, but it also deserves to have all illegal development demolished, and that state-of-the-art pollution control equipment be installed and properly maintained.

Until violators face harsh punitive economic fines and costs, as punishment for their initial and continuing violation of the rules. They will keep doing it. Simple.

Only by making it unprofitable to do so will anyone change, expecting people to turn down money because its the moral, sustainable or correct thing, in this society, is simply not understanding the people involved.

Money counts, everything else doesn't.
