PHUKET: One young Australian man is dead and a second fighting for life after the pair plunged down a rock face while trying to climb a waterfall on Samui late yesterday.
The dead man, aged 24, was carried from the scene in a coma and succumbed to his injuries a couple of hours later, in Bangkok Hospital Samuil on the Thai holiday island.
According to local media reports, the pair set out to climb the 60-metre waterfall late yesterday despite signs warning of the dangers.
They fell from the Na Meung 2 waterfall about 6pm, as darkness descended.
The man who later succumbed to his injuries broke both legs and cracked his head during the fall.
His companion, aged 20, was not as seriously injured but was also admitted to the hospital in a coma.
The Australians appear to have ignored signs warning of the dangers of the waterfall climb.
Rescuers were forced to make their way to the scene in darkness but carefully carried the men down to waiting ambulances.
Phuketwan has been supplied with the names of the men but will not reveal them until relatives have been notified.

Climbing waterfalls in broad daylight often up and down very slippery and uneven paths is dangerous enough in broad daylight let alone when dusk is rapidly approaching. What a tragic waste of a young life. Thoughts go out to his family and loved ones.
