The surprise decision to create the new post was announced in the Australian Treasurer's annual budget speech, reversing a previous decision to cancel the project.
Phuketwan understands that the job has been advertised internally. With candidates already being sought, the likelihood is that the Australian Government would buy or lease an existing property rather than construct a new building.
This cuts the projected time for opening the office from three years to one year.
Having a consul general and staff on Phuket would save tourists and expats the time and expense of undertaking trips to Bangkok for more complicated official processes, although Bangkok embassy staff do pay occasional outreach visits to Phuket.
Much better to buy or lease an existing property.
I have it on good authority from an online news service, which shall remain nameless but which goes by the initials of PHUKETWAN, that buying some property off the plan in Phuket can be disappointing.
