Asean Today: Burma Tourism Booms; MAS Overshoots Runway; Fears of Asean Crime Hub; AirAsia Piece Found

Saturday, January 3, 2015
PHUKETWAN recognises the importance of Asean with the Economic Community approaching and marks what's happening around the region with a new column, Asean Today.

thediplomat.com As Asean prepares to forge a more cohesive community by the end of 2015, Thai officials are warning that an integrated region could also exacerbate the problem of transnational organised crime and undermine efforts to tackle it. Within Asean, Thailand remains a major source, transit point, and destination for regional and subregional transnational organised crime activities. In June, the US State Department named Thailand as one of the world's worst centers for human trafficking.

Malaysia

himalayantimes.com A Malaysia Airlines aircraft overshot the runway at Tribhuvan International Airport yesterday night after one of the flaps in the wing did not open while trying to land. The pilots later managed to land the Boeing 737-8 at the TIA safely as the flap started working while trying to divert the aircraft to India. There were 144 passengers and eight crew members on board.

bloomberg Floods that hurt palm oil production across Malaysia will exacerbate a seasonal decline in output and help to cut inventories, according to CIMB Investment Bank Bhd, which said that it expected prices to remain firm. The inundation affected about 184,000 hectares, or about 3.5 percent of the country's total planted area.

dvb.no The Rangoon Division Justice Department has filed a report with police requesting them to investigate and take action against whoever hoisted the State of Burma flag on top of the Divisional High Court building in Rangoon city centre on New Year's Day. Tourists may have been confused by the sight of the flag - yellow, green and red stripes, the same as the current flag, but with a dancing peacock symbol instead of the Myanmar star - which represented Burmese independence aspirations in the early 1940s under Japanese occupation.

Once the infrastructure is in, then you will notice a serious exodus of tourists going to Burma.

"Unless Thailand competes on price and amenities."

How true, only today I was having a conversation with a friend who got slapped with a whopping bill after he ate a very small portion of ravioli, and a small bottle of water, ... price, 1000 baht !
At these prices it will kill tourism dead if they don't address the serious overcharging.

That is 'logic thinking', Mr. Editor. However, when thai hotels have empty rooms, and Thai Air has empty seats, prices go up instead of down to compete.like in other countries and airlines. Not yet speaking about public transport 'facilities' on Phuket, which not even is willing to copy that of Pattaya or Chiangmai. Nothing in Phuket is competing, just cheating. Correct me if I am wrong. No law enforcement on Phuket, the local police simply do not want to enforce the law! Just walk around and see it. day after day, Night after night.

There is law enforcement on Phuket, just not enough of it.

I would like to see Thailand compete on attitudes towards tourists and foreigners in general.

Friendly, fair and just treatment.

Anyone ?

it's 'ASEAN' not 'Asean'.. but good to see you are still looking forward.. happy new year and good luck with 2015!!

Thank you. Good luck to you, too. Acronyms that are sounded as a word are treated as they are spoken, in lower case fashion - Asean, not ASEAN, Seato not SEATO, Opec not OPEC, Nato not NATO. Those where the letters are sounded remain block capitals.WHO, IMF etc etc.

-reader- 1.000.- Baht? Prices from a 5 * place, no? Your friend should just change the location he eats at.
35 Baht for a nice portion of Barbecue pork with rice and a small soup. Rural Isaan that is.

You may be have not to Mysnmar for s long time:

rapid increase of number of tourists did an unbelievable thing;

prices of hotels increased sometimes like three-fold vs. few years ago; even more - these prices continue to fluctuate - they experiment with more increase ,and then drop,if nobody buys at that price.
The same volatility about food and services prices : you can get same food for 50USD, at the same place when they test grounds, or just for 15USD or 10USD when they don't, all within same evening.

Needless to that such only doesn't support completion and created little stimulus to keep good level of service of improve it.
