Brunei

afp The ban, instituted after Christmas last month when local children and adults were seen wearing clothes ''that resemble Santa Claus,'' raises fresh concerns of religious restrictions after last April's announcement of the introduction of a penal code that will eventually include penalties such as the severing of limbs and death by stoning.

It is a shame that some proclaim Islam to be a tolerant religion, whilst Brunei (and Saudi) prove otherwise. Other countries such as Indonesia are far more open, albeit some areas are still very insular. In the current world clime solidarity should be the way ahead, not isolation and intolerance.

Brunie's cancelling of Xmas is not the first time. In 1990 or thereabouts the celebration was cancelled following the transfer of ownership of the large Japanese Yohan department store to the control of indigenous management in Bandar Seri Begawan, I was living there at the time and I remember it well and even though I'm not a religious person, as I'm a Caucasian,I felt insulted. The audacity of the action of the Imams there is even more insulting considering that the British administration of Brunei protected that 'village' from the Indonesian action of Confrantasi', an attempt by Indonesia to take all of Borneo.
Brunei, is so insignificant in world affairs, if you fly over that pimple state and blink while doing so you'll miss it. It's a joke.

Christmas can still be celebrated indoors in private in Brunei, which is a relief. I've spent time there too . . . very pleasant, tolerant people. Let's hope the moderates speak up and maintain a sensible approach. Extremism should be rejected.

The simple people in almost all countries of the world are pleasant and tolerant.

Nice in personal encounters, but it means nothing if they ever and ever again elect the wrong leaders or not resist them.

If they not resist they are weak, if they agree with them they are not tolerant.
