Tuesday, June 9, 2015
Today Around Southeast Asia

PHUKETWAN recognises the importance of Asean with the Economic Community approaching and marks what's happening around the region with a new column, Asean Today.

Malaysia

afp Malaysian authorities have arrested a European man for allegedly stripping naked and urinating on Mount Kinabalu, an act that some in the country say angered tribal spirits and caused a deadly earthquake. The report said the man was arrested as he sought to fly to the Philippines.

huffingtonpost.com So far, five tourists have been barred from leaving the country pending ''gross indecency'' charges, the AP reports.

wsj.com The Malaysian currency weakened more than one percent against the US dollar, bringing its loss so far this year to more than seven percent. In the bond markets, yields have surged on government debt and the stock market is languishing at its lowest level since January.

Singapore

bbc.com Singapore and Malaysia's Sabah state are observing a day of mourning for those killed in the Mt Kinabalu quake. Sixteen people are confirmed dead after the magnitude 6.0 quake, which hit the mountain in Sabah on Friday. Among the dead were six Singaporean children, their teacher and a guide.

Burma

afp Impoverished Rakhine state is a tinderbox of tension between its Buddhist majority and a heavily persecuted Rohingya Muslim minority, many of whom live in displacement camps after deadly unrest erupted there in 2012. Buddhist hardliners there are planning a day of protest on Sunday against local authorities for helping the desperate boat migrants.

Indonesia

todayonline.com About 28 million Indonesians, or more than five times Singapore's population, continue to live below the poverty line. Taking home US$25 a month, they lack not only education, healthcare, and a roof over their heads but sufficient nutrition to survive.

Philippines

cnn.com The Philippines is set to submit to the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in The Hague this week an almost 300-year-old map showing Scarborough Shoal or Panatag Shoal as part of Philippine territory for three centuries now.

Cambodia

thelawyer.com Thailand's Tilleke & Gibbins continues Asean expansion with Cambodia launch.

Vietnam

AP When ''napalm girl'' photographer Huynh Cong ''Nick'' Ut returned to the village of Trang Bang, he came equipped with something more era-appropriate: He brought his iPhone with him and was given custody of AP Images' Instagram account for the day.

Laos

ft.com In 2009 a poacher killed and ate the last tiger in a preserve for the animals along the border with Laos.

Brunei

channelnewsasia.com Chelsea forward Faiq Jefri Boliah is easily the most marked footballer at the Southeast Asian Games. Everywhere the 17-year-old Brunei royal goes someone is by his side. Close onfield marking meant his SEA Games adventure ended early at the group stage after Brunei were beaten 2-0 by Malaysia to make it five defeats in five games.

and urinating on Mount Kinabalu
==

does it mean they has to carry plastic bags for collection of urine, and provably also a kind of rubber Schlong to connect those reservoirs while hiking without need to stop?

Sue.

I climbed Kinabalu and surprise surprise, plastic bags were not suggested. I do have some cool pics of the jungle toilets on the way up, but they made the toilets in trainspotting (the movie) look like the Ritz.
But there is nothing near the summit and no bushes or tree's so would imagine the summit has seen a fair few breaks taken on it especially when that cold air hits you.

@sue & michael- would you also like to make excuses for them stripping naked to take selfies.?

More fool them it's freezing or very nearly up there, more taken in jest as an official actually thinks an earthquake was actually caused by probably inappropriate behaviour.
Not into the selfie culture but it obviously going that way with gap year challenges looking at recent news stories Angkor wat and many others around the world.

Michael,
Someone is probably right now searching their travel history to determine if these people were recently in Nepal.

Considering the fact that natives used to walk around naked for centuries and relieve themselves where-ever they pleased, it is odd that the mountain would suddenly be upset by the sight of a naked body.

Maybe the mountain just doesn't like "white" people and threw a fit.

Michael,

I guess they took indeed quite hypocritical approach toward these kids.
Most probably the situation closer summit reminds the one like from the Banyan Tree , Shangri-La County(Tibet) review on TA dd.30.10.2006.:

"4.Our guide on the drive/trek we did was very not to our liking/not what we expected. Among other things, he seemed very disinterested in everything other than the prospect of a tip (he fell asleep on the drive and tried to discourage us from wanting to go everywhere advertised), he could not answer any of our questions (he wasn't the knowledgeable guide advertised) and his personal habits made me hugely uncomfortable (and to be honest, a little sick). He called it "Tibetan toilet break". It consisted of stopping the car and urinating just behind it (within earshot), and stopping to urinate/defecate on the trek. I have to say I did not expect to have to go through that - and be offered lunch from him after that! I expected a much more professional and educational drive/trek for the price being charged."

Apparently the latest is that if they pay a fine of 10 buffalo's the spirits will be appeased.
That sounds like an awful lot of bulls hit to me!
