Laos: "The most lethal are cluster bombs.."

Explosive remnants of war remain a massive problem in countries like Laos and Cambodia. There needs to be constant education of kids with a message to keep away from old bombs. Unfortunately, in both countries many poor people will try to dismantle these unstable weapons in order to sell the scrap metal. The consequences are often disastrous.

The bomblets and landmines not only maim and kill innocent people they contaminate the land and can make it impossible to use for agriculture. Landmines can prevent important infrastructure such as roads from being built. There is a huge quantity of unexploded bombs in the Cambodian rivers as a result of US air raids on North Vietnamese Army barges that carried munitions. These days fishermen are killed when bombs are caught in nets.

Fortunately there are large NGOs such as MAG and HALO removing remnants of war and many smaller NGOs are active such as Golden West, Cambodian Self Help Demining and the Vietnam Veterans Mine Clearing Team.

Many of the landmines had actually been laid by child slave soldiers some of whom are now involved in demining.

The link to the Chomsky article is incorrect. One has to copy the article snippet and search google that way. It is a very good article.
