Army Sergeant Major Arrested Over Illicit Kratom on Phuket

Saturday, July 11, 2015
PHUKET: Police from Patong arrested a sergeant major and another man with 120 kilos of illicit kratom leaves about 4am today outside the Hill Top Hotel.

Officers from Kathu Police Station are holding Sergeant Major (First Class) Jamnern Samorhorm, 33, and Noppadon Wisetrat, 21. They also have two pickups.

The kratom was in the trays of the pickups, packaged as normal vegetable products would appear.

The arrests came as the result of a tip-off. Sergeant Major Jamnern was based in Phang Nga with the Army.

The police and army caught in the drugs trade or any criminal activity, should be brought up on charges pertaining to the Military Disciplinary Command, MDC, or the Police Disciplinary Command, PDC. They should get the maximum sentence for bringing the very arms of law enforcement into disrepute.
What am I thinking , this is not a normal thinking society, they will get more wings on their chest,Sergeant Major (First Class) Jamnern and take away the Cl is his class. Other guy will get a 100Baht fine.

Anno,

c'mon, it's KRATOM leaves, that have been quite recently still legal here.

I am strictly anti-drug, not drug user, but still in terms of policies one should pursue viable ones - and, I must agree, kratom criminalization here makes not much sense , at least at the moment.

Thank you Sue (!). It's Kratom ! (Quite a lot admittedly but still ...) It shouldn't even be illegal.

The police would be better warning or arresting people that don't give way at Chalong Circle ... It would save a lot of money in tunnel.

Sue,
We raised you as a child??? on a similar herbal narcotic to help deal with your desire to continually talk.??? It worked for many years until you were 20 years old and learnt to type. Your father and I looked forward to our daily dosage

Hear, hear @James. Of course it shouldn't be illegal. Traditionally used in much of southern Thailand (as well as Malaysia and Indonesia), it was only banned in the 1940s as it was seen by officialdom to benefit those afflicted with opium addiction at a time when opium was legal in Thailand and the state profited from its sale (opium that is). Krathom, one of the most benign, subtle 'drugs' there is although I'm not sure what it does when consumed in conjunction with some forms of cough medicine, 'energy' drinks and alcohol.

The problem is, as you are cognizant of Kaen Phet, is that fairly benign substances like kratom get demonized, while legal drugs like alcohol and tobacco kill millions, but law makers like those two substances better than say Kratom or marijuana - the other demonized drug.

That Kratom and Marijuana (lumped in with heroin in many jurisdictions) are called drugs and not herbs speaks volumes about our society.
