Areas for Umbrellas Staked Out on Beach in front of Phuket Resort
By Prasit Tarnsirisin Tuesday, January 13, 2015
PHUKET: Three sectors for use of umbrellas were delineated by officials at the beach in front of Le Meridien Phuket Beach Resort today.
Eight umbrellas will be permitted in each each area, with 2.3 metres between umbrellas.
Officials from Kata-Karon joined resort representatives. No vice governor or representative from Marine Office 5 were involved in today's meeting.
Phuketwan noticed three jet-skis parked on the beach. A resort representative said the jet-skis were not the resort's property.
The public beach on Relax Bay has been previously checked and cleared of all umbrellas and sunbeds.
A massage section some distance from the spots where the umbrellas are to go appeared to already be operating.
Details of the delineated areas are to be sent to the Governor's office for final approval.

I think 50/50 would be good like in the old days in the movies, left side for smoking or was it right side, so left side of the beach for umbrellas etc Anyway I hope you understand. Then most people will be 50/50 happy or 50/50 unhappy depending on what your personality is.

This is all very well assuming one can get access to that beach. For years Meridien have been hogging Relax Bay and insinuating that it is their 'private beach'. The doormen at the gate of the property were so intimidating last time I went there that it has been two years that I have not even considered taking a pizza or a beer at the resort's beachfront food outlets.

Hollywood did not produce any good movie since 1994 with Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels....
Lots of good stuff here at Phuket to make a good entertaining movie!

What difference does it make, if there is any enforcement at all it will disappear after a week just like always.
Next regulation by the authorities : Everyone must have a Hitler moustache and wear a Charlie Chaplin bowler hat to go with their umbrella. It gets more ludicrous by the minute. Do these people really get paid in their jobs ? Probably not, that's why everyone's on the take. Incompetence and corruption rule here, best get used to it.

Thailand had the most beautiful spots in the world in phuket. Talk about a lost paradise and phuket is it. Full of greedy people and so called investors with no respect. Love My Thaiwife for 16 years but Phuket is not loved by me no more.

I was laughing as i read this story and looked at the pictures and then i saw the jetskis and was saddened. There really is seemingly no hope for this island.

Can this get any more ridiculous? Let the tourist bake. The mafia wants to get their beaches back. In the end, tourists won't come and the island will suffer. So sad. Hope they sort this nonsense out soon.

This is Thailand and it's up to those running the show to implement what they want.
If what they do is only to serve the corrupt and greedy then logic dictates that tourists will vote with their feet and find other destinations that are far more welcoming and far less dangerous and intimidating.
We are already seeing a drop in tourist numbers and from most foreigners perspective this doesn't come much of a surprise.
Each year I get the same calls from the family back home ... 'Can we come to see you?' The answer is always the same ... don't bother it's not the sort of place fit for tourists, I'll come and visit you.
I wonder how many others do the same and how long this will last before Phuket is devoid of tourists?

This is farsical, and let us not talk about the transportation issues on this island. Maybe it is time to go elsewhere next winter!

We was in Patong in Dec. 2014 and decided not to come back in March as we did in the past years. Instead we book a trip to Vietnam. Some days ago I got a message from our travel agency that we should ask soon for our Visa as the handling time has increased from 3 days to 3 weeks. I think some guys had the same idea!!!
