PHUKET: Management at the Laguna Holiday Club has backed calls for a ''fair and balanced focus'' on the activities of all timeshare operators on Phuket.
''We have nothing to hide,'' the club says in a statement today, adding that it has been ''fully co-operating and advising'' the Consumer Protection Centre about the need for timeshare regulation.
Although the well-regarded Laguna is not one of the operators who employ troublesome timeshare touts in Patong and Karon, it was ironically the cause of a meeting of key authorities at Provincial Hall in Phuket City yesterday.
It is believed Laguna Holiday Club was not invited to send a representative to the meeting. The statement follows:
Laguna Holiday Club has welcomed moves by the Consumer Protection Centre and Phuket's deputy governor to examine and tighten the rules relating to the sale of timeshares on Phuket.
LHC reaffirms its active support for the Thai Consumer Protection Centre to tighten its rules relating to the sale of timeshares. We have, for some time, been fully co-operating and advising the CPC on this matter.
We believe that a properly regulated regime for the industry is long overdue and have long taken a leadership position within the Thailand industry on this matter.
We also support Phuket Vice Governor Somkiet Sangkaosutthirak's invitation to all timeshare operators on Phuket to clearly outline the conduct required of them.
In this regard we support a fair and balanced focus on the activities of all timeshare operators on Phuket. We believe this is also long overdue.
LHC is adamant it meets all necessary ethical and operating standards required by Thai authorities to conduct a legitimate business on Phuket. We have nothing to hide.
As part of a publicly listed company our records are audited and publicly available for scrutiny annually.
We will continue to apply these regulations in an equitable manner and to the highest ethical standards for all members in accordance with our legal obligations, and bearing in mind the requirements of our members as well.
LHC is a long standing and respected member of the Phuket business community which prides itself on promoting Phuket as a desirable destination.
LHC does not intend making any further comment as this would be inappropriate until such time that the deputy governor's meeting is held.
