WORK IS going ahead rapidly on the large Outlet Village site close to the tee-junction on the Bypass Road.
The development is expected to introduce yet another first for the island along a thoroughfare that in recent weeks has seen the opening of HomeWorks superstore and the Phuket Brewery entertainment venue.
A monks' ceremony took place on the Outlet Village site on Tuesday, although management was too shy to allow Phuketwan to photograph the event.
Our understanding from other Outlet Village stores in Thailand is that the Phuket version will bring large-scale wholesale shopping to the island for the first time.
The management is extremely coy and declined to say when the facility will open.
Having told Phuketwan that we would be sent photographs of Tuesday's ceremony, the high-ups at Outlet Village apparently changed their minds.
Judging by the water filling depressions on the site, bad weather has probably caused a few delays, as it usually does on most building sites through the monsoon season.
But we would be surprised if the ''Welcome'' sign did not go up before New Year.
What we cannot say is how many cars will be able to squeeze into the car park and whether there will be an easier U-turn created before vehicles face the awkward tee-junction at the highway.
What we can say is that there are 26 brands listed on the fence outside the site, and a sign that says ''Brand Name Saving Up To 70 Percent Off.''
Sports brands, especially golf brands, tend to dominate the list.
It includes Nike, Adidas, Puma, Lacoste, Rip Curl, Oxbow, Nautica, Taylormade, Callaway Golf, Titleist, Arrow, Pierre Cardin, Levi's, Geox, Dortmund, Esprit, French Kitty, Triumph, Guy Laroche, Warner Bros Studio Store, and some other brands that containing Xes and strange symbols that we find impossible to type.
It will be interesting to see what Outlet Village adds to the Phuket shopping experience. From a consumer perspective, the more competition, the better.
Phuketwan wishes Outlet Village good luck.
