Phuket Gains Second Movenpick at 'Laguna'

Friday, May 13, 2011
MOVENPICK has confirmed its expansion on Phuket with the aim of branding six resorts in Thailand before 2014, part of a regionwide growth program.

First new management contract comes with the Palm Beach Club at Bang Tao, tucked on the west coast beach close to Laguna Phuket.

The 39 residences, restaurant and facilities became the Movenpick Residences Laguna Beach Phuket from the beginning of the month, a nod to its proximity to the seven resorts that make up its large neighbor (although whether Laguna Phuket approves is not clear.)

The much larger Movenpick Resort and Spa Karon Beach Phuket has been the group's signature base on Phuket and in Thailand for several years now, developing a good reputation and attracting conferences.

A spokesperson for the group told Phuketwan before the release of a media handout that the Bang Tao addition should have special appeal to golfers and their families, with the Laguna course very close and Blue Canyon, Mission Hills, Red Mountain and Loch Palm within easy driving distance.

The new Movenpick resort certainly has a spectacular location on a Phuket beach that has yet to become as popular as Karon, Patong and other sandy arcs further south. Surin beach, with its developing nightlife, is not far away.

Andreas Mattmuller, chief operating officer of Movenpick Hotels and Resorts, Middle East and Asia, repeated in the media release what we'd already been told: ''We have plans to increase our portfolio in the country and to operate six hotels in Thailand by 2014.''

Most of the accommodation at the Bang Tao resort offers plenty of space, with pools and jacuzzis.

Plans for the Pattaya property didn't, I believe, come to much, although the Sentosa (Singapore) resort eventually opened.

Well done PW; seems you're the first to break the story in Phuket.

I understand that the resort's name is changing to Movenpick Residences Bangtao Beach Phuket.
