Phuket powerbroker Anchalee Vanich: approval for flyovers still coming

Phuket Flyovers Yet to Gain Green Light: Anchalee

Monday, March 28, 2011
THE Phuket flyover that was to settle the dispute involving a 600-metre stretch of mangroves near Phuket City's Saphan Hin park is not yet a certainty, says Anchalee Vanich, Secretary-General to the Prime Minister.

The former Phuket politician said that Cabinet had yet to make a decision between the flyover, which would cost 100 million baht but save the mangroves, and a normal road, which at 30 million baht would be much less expensive.

The road is seen as an essential link between schools and university facilities now based around the Phuket City park and many commuters who live south of Phuket City.

The short length of road was the centre of a long-standing wrangle between then Governor Wichai Praisa-ngob and the Chief of the Natural Resources and Environment Department of Phuket, Ong-art Chanacharnmongkol. Both men are no longer in those roles.

Khun Anchalee added that approval for another controversial stretch of road, a proposed route betwen Patong and Chalong that would reduce the time for the journey by half, was still being considered.

She added that budget had been set aside for creating smoother traffic flow at Phuket City's two ket intersections, the Central Festival and Tesco Lotus corners, but that decisions had yet to be made about whether smoother traffic flows should be engineered using overpasses or underpasses.

I don't get it. All the environmental destruction that takes place on this island and there is a major dispute over a few mangrove trees?

Once a road is build then construction will start to take place around that round so the land value around it will increase...therefore you get the dispute. Drive through the country and you will see that most houses on the countryside are build as near the main road as possible...

Under/over passes at the TescoLotus and Central Festival junctions are unnecessary and will lead to even bigger traffic flow problems elsewhere. Why? In the case of TescoLotus, an under/over pass will simply lead to longer queues of traffic at the set of traffic lights about 500m east of TescoLotus. In the case of Central Festival, this will lead to longer queues of traffic at the traffic lights 1 km south and 500m east of the junction. The benefit of the existing lights is that they stagger the flow of traffic approaching these lights. An under/over pass will result in a constant stream of traffic making it impossible and unsafe to turn right anywhere along this stretch of road. This sounds like an expensive waste of money for a problem that really does not exist. The traffic flow problem is only for a short period twice a day. If this project goes ahead, I predict bigger traffic flow problems as a result.

Is there a longer wait at a set of Phuket lights than at the Tesco Lotus intersection? For those turning right from Phuket City into the bypass road, it's often the case anytime that drivers have to wait through two 140-second delays. There are certainly other bottlenecks that also need to be dealt with. But overpass or underpass, cities need traffic solutions, and Phuket City is no exception.

All that will happen is there will be at least two 140 second waits at the other sets of traffic lights where waiting times at the moment are more reasonable. The so-called solution will only result in shifting the problem to another location. Anyway, what's the problem with waiting an additional 140 seconds when it's busy? Why the hurry?

Why are there so many people who hate progress and persist in finding reasons why change shouldn't come? The one certainty is that the island's population will grow larger and flyovers/inderpasses are going to become desperately needed, especially when the light change wait becomes 10 minutes instead of five minutes. ''Small town'' thinkers long for the village to stay the same. It won't. A simple, well-planned solution will speed traffic in all directions.

You clearly have not understood my point. The point is that the proposed solution will merely result in the problem being shifted to other sets of traffic lights - plain common sense! It's interesting to note that your comments do not refute this point but resort to emotive statements such as "Is there a longer wait at a set of Phuket lights," and "Why are there so many people who hate progress," and "'Small town' thinkers long for the village to stay the same." You have offered no argument as to why the under/over pass solution is the best solution and that it will not result in problems to traffic flows elsewhere. It's irrantional thinking like this that costs this island unnecessary billions of Baht in public funds which could be much better spent, e.g. the Patong "Welcome" sign on Patong hill.

I understand perfectly. The planners are just as aware of the potential for transferring the problem and will be doing their best to smooth the traffic flow. It would be foolish to assume that because one project has been mishandled, all island projects will be mishandled. A different department is in charge of strategic road planning. Change will come despite your desire for nothing to alter. No point in negativity.

ED said; It would be foolish to assume that because one project has been mishandled, all island projects will be mishandled.

Why would anything change ED? Show me ONE island project that has NOT been mishandled.

Sorry david, I'm busy. I have no time to do your research for you.

Certain road improvements are needed of course, but the main problem is the lack of driving skills IMO. People driving like maniacs and the most common reason for you being late or stuck in traffic is because of an accident. I would dread to think how many accidents per day happen in Phuket. The "non official" ones and the ones the Police report.

Traffic on an island is inevitable. Leave earlier, make sure your AC is working and expect it.

If people could use Roundabouts correctly traffic would flow easier. Traffic lights don't allow a proper flow of traffic. That's why in the west more roundabouts and mini roundabouts are being placed even at T junctions.

Editor Comment:

Other commenters have previously claimed that traffic roundabout are being replaced with traffic lights. Roundabouts work best when the flow is even on all sides, but not well when smaller roads intersect with major roads. It's not a case of lights versus circles, but of using what works best appropriately.

You do make a fair point, but you also have to make the roundabout very big, and people have to use it correctly, by staying in their lane and not doing what many driver do (even on normal roads) by driving in a straight line. Curves and corners are made to be followed not cut up.
The Monument has 4 lanes going into 2 on the roundabout and people do not give-way or understand the concept how they work.

I would go as far to say, that many people don't know how traffic lights work, as everyone seems to want to jump Red lights.

When will the Traffic Police, actually make an arrest for dangerous driving? Isn't that one of their jobs to prevent accidents, not arrest them after it happens?

There will never be pursuits by police on Phuket because it's too dangerous on an island with so many motorcycles.

Who said anything about pursuits ED? A simple radio call to police up ahead to stop the offender is so easy.More so when the roads are so congested,Yes?

Why not post my last response please? You really do not take kindly to people pointing out your many "mis- inderstandings" of posts huh.
