Phuket Families Object to Phuket City Land Title Being Granted

Wednesday, March 14, 2012
PHUKET: About 50 people turned out to prevent a surveying team from working on a controversial block of land in Phuket City today.

Hundreds of families who live on the land in the King Kaew Moo 3 section of Phuket Coty's Rassada district are fighting a claim that a man owns the 300 rai on which their homes sit.

The chanote title claim allegedly goes back 50 years to a person who is long dead but as-yet unnamed relatives have decided to activate the claim.

The protesters went to the Land Titles office in Phuket City to continue voicing their objections to the title being legitimised.

These people need a lawyer that knows his stuff. Even in Thailand there is legislation which governs "prescription", where land rights even those fortified by a chanot title expire after a certain amount of time (10 years in case of a chanot) if it is not defended at regular intervals against illegal occupiers. To try to "activate" a claim after 50 years is just ridiculous

They'd probably be happy with a lawyer who knows her stuff, too.

Why protect squatters? these are not poor and destitute people, but people who KNOWINGLY broke the law and built their houses on what is now very valuable land, but of course people like Guenter would like them to be given this land now so they can become instant millionaires. With their own Chanote too I suppose? How about people that ones upon a time decided not to break the law and build on land they didn't own? Well, stupid them I guess? Again, these are NOT slum dwellers, but peole that have built regular homes, own cars etc etc. Just evict them, and if the old chanote can't be 'activated' then the government should appropriate the land. And then sell it at auction. But of course, people like Guenter wants to reward theft. It's just insane. Regardless of what happens to the old Chanote, the squatters should NOT be rewarded for being criminals.
