Old and new: Phuket's coast turns blue to protect the environment

Phuket Environment 'Better Protected'

Tuesday, July 26, 2011
PHUKET: New regulations governing land use on Phuket were explained today to Phuket administrators who will undertake to enforce them.

Additional zones largely increase the commitment to defining Phuket's environmentally sensitive areas around the coast. Large blue areas now shade maps offshore of Phuket, whereas before there was only blank space.

Instead of 13 different kinds of land usage, the new regulations specify 16 different zones.

The regulations, an upgrade from previous conditions, will remain in place on Phuket for five years from July 7.

About 100 representatives from Phuket councils attended today's meeting at Provincial Hall in Phuket City.

Vice Governor Niwit Aroonrat urged developers and town planners to check the provisions of the new regulations before undertaking or authorising new projects.

The Phuket office of the Department of Town and Country Planning in Phuket City has the details. Telephone 076 216927.

Setting up new regulations is a very positive attitude but without law-enforcers and clear explanations in Thai and English by local authorities through media.
Most of the time Thai laws are flouted by greedy businessmen as money talk has more power than politicians.
First step would be to train civil servants about their rights and duties and why they should reinforce the law.

Wow, I'm very impressed by the measures taken so far. Drawing a blue border around the map to show that the sea is also important is going to make a huge difference.

I guess that's why above Andaman White Beach Hotel at Nai Thon they are going flat out clearing and pushing a road in at present for another coastal development, at a guess I would think the road go's higher than 80 metres.
