Officials check the land in the Karon hillside of Phuket yesterday

Phuket Property Corruption: Developments Expected

Friday, May 25, 2012
PHUKET: The Anti-Corruption Commission is investigating corrupt land deals on Phuket today and will be meeting officials at Provincial Hall in Phuket City this afternoon.

Officials yesterday visited a site on a hillside at Mai Ngao Cape in Karon, latest in a long list of Phuket properties alleged to have been corruptly acquired.

More contentious properties are expected to be looked at this morning. The commission's activities are likely to continue on Phuket for at least two months.

Special attention has been paid so far to two shorefront stretches at Freedom Beach, below the hillside property that was looked at yesterday.

Freedom Beach, on a bay south of Patong, is considered to be extremely valuable for future development of a resort.

But officials say as many as 13 individuals may have conspired to grant the public land on a title to a businessman.

Stories like this one have been seen for some time now, let's see in 6-12 months if anybody was sent to court for corruption or related charges.

If the Anti corruption commission are looking at land deals in Phuket, they should come to Bang Niang beach (Khao Lak). Greedy, selfish Resorts have stolen the beach. In some cases the resorts have taken so much of the beach nobody can walk along the beach. Come on down and see this for yourself, if you dare. I did'nt think anyone in Thailand could own the beach.
