PHUKET: Three large projects for Phuket - two exceeding 1.5 billion baht - have won the backing of the Board of Investment in the first six months of 2011.
The smallest of them may be the most unusual. The BoI has given its imprimatur to a 150 million baht project to develop the catering centre at the enlarged Phuket International Airport, where 2.5 million airlines meals will be produced each year by Phuket Air Catering Co Ltd..
The other two projects are perhaps more conventional, if more intriguing. The first is a 1.684 billion baht development at Cape Nga on Koh Sireh, the island reached by bridge from Phuket City on Phuket's east coast.
All a spokesperson was able to tell Phuketwan was that the land had been purchased, and that at least 200 jobs were expected to be created when it goes ahead. Talk has it that at least one more major international brand is to follow Westin to Koh Sireh.
Despite critics saying that the east coast of Phuket does not have as much appeal as the beaches of the west coast, there appears to be no shortage of investment - if only because the west coast is virtually fully developed.
Fisherman Harbor in Kathu/Patong is the other BOI-approved project, with a value of 1.7 billion and 109 jobs attached. The names of more big resort brands have been attached to this project.
One potential design, posted on YouTube, shows a tall condo-style development set among lagoons or swimming pools.
Board of Investment Region 6 Director Suwit Chuavichian said a total of 19 projects had been approved for Phuket and the other six provinces in the region in the first half of the year.

So now a project, which is clearly trying to block the access to the fishermen village at the southern end of Patong, gets approved by BOI. Great. All the people who help to rebuild the village after the Tsunami will be enlightened to hear about it. Soon the stairs at the south end of the bridge will be the only access by land.
