Best Restaurant of 2008 contender
Telephone: 076 239730
Open: 11am-10pm daily
Address: 22/1 Moo 2 Thepkasattri Road Muang Phuket.
Style: International waterfront eatery with a tilt towards California and Sydney.
Price range: Smoked Salmon sandwiches are 295 baht, grilled chicken 260 baht, and prices mostly move up from there. Ten percent service charge. Regulars quibble about the cost but keep coming back.
Specialties: Pan-roasted golden chicken breast with tomato-onion-bell pepper chutney on creamy parmesan risotto, gilled tuna wrapped in parma ham with rocket mizuna salad and an orange-marsala-cherry tomato reduction, prime Australian beef tenderloin with roasted herb potatoes, caramelized shallots and a cabernet sauvignon jus. (850 baht) From the dessert list: 'Lighter than Air' Lime cheesecake with passion fruit coulis and margarita jelly wedges.
What the manager says: Watermark is a bright, airy alfresco eatery striving to serve a quality product without unnecessary pomp or formality. A quality product starts with quality ingredients. The new menu is lighter, fresher and possibly more Mediterranean - clean, fresh flavours brought together well. The wine list is also reflective of this.
What Phuketwan says: The high vaulted arcs that stretch across the water and the spectacular powerboats beneath continue to make Watermark a dramatic location. Five years on, the island is spawning competitors but the Big W still has its following. During the day, it's snacks for business meetings and open laptops. By night, there's a romantic glow with the Friday happy hour from 5pm still a popular fixture. Saturdays bring an after-dinner DJ and a sexy hot fire show that burns until 1am. Our suggestion to boost custom: hold a nightly lottery and allow each lucky winner to ride off into the dark in one of those magnificent powerboats.
How to find it: Turn inside the Boat Lagoon Marina off Thepasattri Road and keep going past the drydock until you spy the crest of the Watermark's signature curved roof on the right.
Parking: A few bays directly outside, more in the surrounding strip.
