Best Restaurant of 2008 contender
Telephone: 076 211500
Open: 11am-11pm daily
Address: At the top of Rang Hill in the heart of Phuket City
Style: Local food amid a glorious hilltop forest setting.
Price range: Not expensive. If the cost of a Big Mac is a guide in the West, then the cost of a coconut works the same way on Phuket. (And if you can't order one, you should wonder about the restaurant). At Tunk-ka, a coconut costs 35 baht (plus service charge). Plenty of juices, shakes and smoothies are also available, along with good local coffee. Mung bean sweet and sour with mixed pork and shrimp (100 baht) crab meat omlette (90 baht) soybean paste and crab meat in coconut cream sauce (100 baht) and stir-fried assorted nuts, dried squid, smoked shrimp and fruits (120 baht) are indicative of style and price. Deep fried chicken wings are 90 baht. Add 10 percent for that service charge.
Specialty: Sour seems to be the Tunk-ka taste. Mind you, there is a bit of sweet in there as well. Predominantly the menu proffers local food, yet dishes are also listed in English and most are not overly spicy.
What the management says: Magnificent views over Phuket City and the ocean beyond. We specialise in Thai cuisine, Phuket local dishes with seafood fresh daily. We also have the best iced coffee in Thailand, Tunk-ka iced coffee.
What Phuketwan says: On location alone, Tunk-ka is a must-see. It's at the very top of Rang Hill. Then you descend to the restaurant down steps of huge wooden sleepers, under a canopy of branches, leaves and vines of all kinds. Some of the surrounding trees are magnificent. A troop of monkeys can sometimes be heard and seen. So can squirrels, darting from tree to tree, or birds and butterflies, depending on the time of day. Bats can also be found on the hill. The view from the top over Phuket City is breathtaking and Tunk-ka captures every breeze, just the way a hilltop glade should. It's a great place to come to sit on handsome old wrought iron chairs and recover some energy from the heat of the day over an iced coffee or a juicy coconut. It's equally pleasant for dinner at night under lights. By day and by night, Thais come to the top of the hill in considerable numbers to enjoy the cool air, the greenery and the views. We plan to go back for the black sesame dumpling with ginger tea (35 baht.)
How to find it: Head uphill to the very top of Rang Hill via the tourist road from Mae Luan Road, or take the back road that winds up from alongside the Bangkok Phuket Hospital.
Parking: Plenty of space. Busses often park here so visitors can take in the stunning views. Exceptionally romatic at night.
