PHUKET: Organisers of tomorrow's Laguna Phuket International Marathon are hoping that more than 5000 runners and walkers will make it to the start line.
Depite Japan's tsunami on March 11, the Japanese contingent has returned and is ''stronger than ever,'' says Debbie Dionysius, Laguna Phuket's assistant vice president of Destination Marketing.
''The enthusiasm from the Japanese contingent of about 250 is incredible,'' she said, with a couple of star performers involved in television projects and an ecomarathon that will extend for 10 years to benefit the victims.
''We love to see them and they come year after year. To travel is to run,'' she said.
About 1600 participants this year are from overseas, with events of varying distances attracting everything from groups from local schools to the two-kilometre race for children to longer events.
Motorists travelling around the north of Phuket on Sunday morning are advised to check the route of the marathon first.
The event features a Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K Run, 91.5FM Phuket 5K Community Walk and the 2K Kids Run.
