PHUKET: A total of 4303 bicycle riders have registered for the Phuket section of the national Bike for Mom ride on Sunday, officials say.
Registration has closed. Riders are being advised to wear helmets and pedal safely.
The mass ride begins at Phuket Provincial Hall at 3pm and continues over a 26-kilometre route, winding up with the last finishers at 6pm at Saphan Hin public park in Phuket City.
A bicycles only lane will be defined on the route through the Central Festival Phuket junction to Kathu and back through the outskirts of Old Phuket Town.
The nationwide Bike for Mom celebrates HM The Queen's birthday this week and is a move towards a more healthy lifestyle for thousands of new bicycle riders.
Earlier this month, Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-O-Cha said 300,000 people had signed on to ride throughout Thailand. Rain on the day could bring some delays.
Road safety authorities and hospitals and health authorities have worked together to minimise traffic congestion and keep riders as safe as possible.
Sunday's ride and news that Thailand could soon have an extended network of bicycle routes has driven an explosion of interest in the sport.
