What owner Nantachat Julapadung says: ''I worked on Royal Caribbean Cruise Line and Cunard for eight years then opened Steak Samkong in 1999. The most popular steak was 50 baht then. Now it's 65 baht.''
What Phuketwan says: Over the years, hundreds of local Thais have had their first western style meal at this restaurant. In most cases, it was probably a well-cooked steak. We don't usually break news in restaurant reviews, but on August 9, Steak Samkong is opening a second outlet, the BBQ Rib Texas (or the other way around if you are not Thai) not far away, on the other side of Yaowarat Road. Owner Khun Nantachat believes it will be the first rib specialty restaurant in Phuket City. In line with Steak Samkong's policy of good value, the BBQ Rib Texas will be offering Thai and American breakfast for 79 baht from 7am to noon, a buffet lunch from 11am to 2pm for 99 baht, and a la carte from 2pm. Just as Khun Nantachat believed in 1999 that the time was right for local Thais to try western steak, so he now believes Thai appetites are ready for bbq ribs. Prices at Steak Samkong ensure its popularity among Thais and foreigners. You can get steaks elsewhere, and you can get Thai food elsewhere, but you can get both here. There is nothing plastic about the food or the furniture at Steak Samkong, but it is fair to say a meal here is more likely to fill your stomach than fire your imagination. It will not empty your wallet, either. On the walls hang momentos of Khun Nantachat's travelling years, including two lines of signal flags from a cruise ship. Customers have been known to ask: ''Which country does that flag belong to?' 'The road down from the restaurant towards the notorious Samkong intersection and around the bend has sprouted restaurants of all kinds, including Steak Samkong imitators. Khun Nantachat believes that Yaowarat Road and its continuation are more attractive than most busy roadside settings, which explains the phenomenon. We expect the BBQ Rib Texas will be around for a good while to come.
How to find it: Between Wachira Hospital and Bangkok Hospital Phuket, Steak Samkong sits on a bend on the same side of the road.
Parking: In Yaowarat Road.
