Best Restaurant of 2008 contender
Telephone: 076 360890
Open: From 8.30am for breakfast, lunch and dinner until 1am
Address: Royal Phuket Marina, 63/302 Moo 2, Thepkrasattri Road, Koh Kaew, Phuket City.
Style: International waterfront dining
Price range: Affordable. An attempt is made to prevent the cost of a meal for two or more taking off like a speedboat laden with triple Yamaha 200s.
Specialty: The bar menu is very popular during the day with Melts a growing favorite. Rack of lamb (880 baht) lamb shank (520 baht) and Ribeye steak (620 baht for 350g) are all in demand at night.
What the manager/chef says: A lot of people enjoy sitting outside especially among the boats and lights of an evening. Skipper wines are drinkable and not expensive. Comfortable surroundings and casual dining in a maritime atmosphere.
What Phuketwan says: Outdoorsy handsome round wooden tables under umbrellas allow lunchers (and breakfasters and diners) to take in the yachts and powerboats of the marina. Happy hour from 5pm to 7pm is likely to attract a few sailors determined to develop a rolling gait. We liked the large white dinner plates and the taste of just about everything we tried. The home made fries (90 baht) looked good, along with Ponting's Steak Sandwich (280 baht) and a selection of burgers (260 baht-320 baht). Here's what a sample Melt means: ''Grilled smoked bacon and sun-dried tomatoes, with the finest New Zealand cheddar grilled until golden brown.'' There's also Botham's Sausage and Onion Melt (240 baht) and Mansell's Mediterranean Melt. Given the ritzy surroundings, we were impressed with the prices and the range of reds and whites on the wine list. (House wine, 180 baht a glass or 750 baht a carafe).
How to find it: Royal Phuket Marina is on Thepkasattri Road, next to the Boat Lagoon and close to the turnoff to the Bypass Road to Phuket City and the southern part of the island.
Parking: Park close and walk through the square or underground, a little further away. There's acres of space.
