THE SONGKRAN Thai New Year is bringing together Phuket and Phang Nga to celebrate with a three-day festival on Sarasin Bridge, the historic link between the neighboring provinces.
A first of its kind, the festival from April 11 to April 13 will mix traditional and modern, including a Miss Sarasin Festival contest, a swimming race between Phuket and Phang Nga, a concert featuring popular stars and bands, and sea, bicycle and foot races.
Leading figures from Phuket and Phang Nga gathered at the Merlin Hotel in Phuket City yesterday to announce the Sarasin Festival. Present were four contestants who will be vying for the Miss Sarasin Songkran crown, and the 100,000 baht winner's prize.
Among the artists lined up for the three-day funfest are Modern Dog, singer Pan, Beatbox and local bands.
April 11 6am: bicycle rally registration; 8am: traditional Songkran ceremony; 9.30am: bicycle race; 2.30pm: longboat racing begins; 8.30pm: Beatbox concert; 9-10pm: singer Pan on stage.
April 12 4am: marathon registration; 6am: marathon race; 2pm: canoes/kayak races; 3pm: longboat races for 20 person and 50 person vessels; 7pm: acoustic local bands; 8.30pm: Miss Songkran contest.
April 13 2pm: greasy pole climbing contest; 2.30pm: sea boxing on a pole; silly boat races; 2-3pm: Modern Dog concert.
