In a match that had everything except 11 men playing for Phuket, the local side almost staged a remarkable victory. Almost. Big Bang overcame a 1-2 deficiency in the final minutes of extra time to escape with a 2-2 draw.
The crowd at Surakul Stadium in Phuket City showed their frustration with the referee at halftime when objects were thrown in the direction of the man with the whistle. The fan's anger followed a red card for Phuket's No. 34.
By halftime, it was already evident that Phuket fans were in for - dare we say it again - a rollercoaster ride. At that stage, both sides had scored a goal. But with 10 men, it could have been anticipated that Phuket would find winning difficult.
Defying the odds, Ludovick Takam scored his second for the green machine at the 55 minute mark, a deficit that Big Bang only overhauled in the dying minutes.
It was not the flying start to the Division One season's second stanza that Phuket had hoped for. But it was certainly a night of exciting football and tomfoolery.
It is sad to see that Thai football fans cannot contain their excitement or frustrations & resort to violence & intimidation. It is not what I might expect from Thai society.
