PHUKET: The 2014 Laguna Phuket International Marathon, the ninth edition of the annual Run Paradise race which brings thousands to Phuket each year, will see thousands of runners, family and Phuket community members come together again this year on Sunday, June 8.
This year's race which includes a marathon, a half-marathon, a 10.5km run, a 5km walk/run, and ac 2km kids run expects to draw 5000 participants.
Like every year, athletes booking their slots in Laguna Phuket's 2014 marathon and triathlon series are being asked to raise funds through donations and sponsorships for the resort???s long established Laguna Phuket Foundation to operate its various charitable programs. Over the years, more than THB 4.6 million was raised to fund such initiatives as the recently launched Fully Booked! Mobile Learning Centre.
''I am very pleased to announce that Laguna Phuket has launched Fully Booked! Mobile Learning Centre in Phuket on April 25 this year. Thanks to all the marathoners and supporters, the Centre is ready to service schoolchildren in Phuket and its neighboring provinces starting this June,'' said Khun Prapa Hemmin, Director of Sales-MICE & Corporate Events, Laguna Phuket.
''It is our hope to make the race a Run Paradise, at which runners enjoy running, meeting their peers and participating in fulfilling charitable causes.''
Since the project initiation two years ago, more than 2.2 million Baht was fundraised for the Centre through the generous support of Laguna Phuket triathletes, marathoners, associates, and community members. A matching fund of 2.2 million Baht was made by Banyan Tree Global Foundation to purchase and outfit the mobile vehicle, along with an additional 500,000 Baht for purchase of books and learning materials.
The funding is enough to operate the Centre for five academic years, starting from June 2014. Laguna Phuket will continue to fundraise for the Centre to keep providing the service to underprivileged schools even after this initial period.
Runners, supporters, donors, and community members participating this year's LPIM are cordially invited to visit the Centre which will be showcased at the CSR booth in the event's Expo area.
This year's LPIM will also continue its Green Runner' concept following last year's success in replacing plastic cups with reusable resin cups on the run course. 40 volunteer Official Sweepers will try to pick up and clear out trash on the course as much as they can.
