A warning goes up for the dangers of lanterns to aircraft

Heavy Penalties for Loy Kratong Sky Lanterns

Thursday, November 15, 2012
PHUKET: Officials and resorts across Phuket have been warned to not send up sky lanterns to mark the Loy Kratong festival on November 28.

Sky lanterns are strictly banned within seven kilometres of Phuket International Airport.

With aircraft sometimes forced to circle awaiting a landing, the radius of risk is probably even wider.

Warning letters have been sent by managers at Phuket International Airport to Phuket Provincial Hall, to district chiefs and to Phuket resort general managers.

Penalties for not abiding by the law are severe, with jail terms between six months and seven years and fines of 1000 baht to 14,000 baht.

Sky lanterns are also generally regarded as dangerous because they can come down and start fires in trees, wiring or on the roofs of buildings.

Vendors who sell them to tourists on Phuket beaches without permission are risking prosecution.

Don't forget that from most places on the island the lantarns are allowed, just not within 7 km's from the airport.
