PHUKET: Camara Ahmed, the young footballer who collapsed in a Phuket FC game in 2010, has died at home in the Ivory Coast.
His brother called Phuket player NeNe Bi, who also comes from the Ivory Coast, to tell him of his friend's death.
Phuket FC - or FC Phuket as it then was - helped Camara recover after his on-field heart attack at Surakul Stadium.
He was flown from Phuket to the Ivory Coast in September, still bed-ridden. Camara would have had the chance to see for the first time the child his wife gave birth to soon after his collapse.
Two years of care by Phuket FC have taken the cost to two million baht, plus an additional 800,000 baht at Bangkok Phuket Hospital and 200,000 baht at Vachira Phuket Hospital that the hospitals have defrayed.
Phuket FC, looking to perform to high standards next year in First Division, will be holding a match at Surakul Stadium in Phuket City today between the core team and a team of foreign players who are seeking to win green jumpers.
The try-out begins at 4pm and admission is free.
In the current futsal league, Phuket United defeated Samutsongkhram United 7-3 at home in Phuket last night, watched by a keen crowd of 720 fans. The Phuket team won 7-3 to snaffle ninth position.
