PHUKET and Pattaya are in constant battle for supremacy as Thailand's top beach destination but with golfers, at least, they're getting equal play in the Phuket-Pattaya Amateur Ryder Cup from May 28 to 30.
Launched in 1996, the biannual golf tournament has been played alternatively in Phuket and Pattaya, with this year's event at the Phuket Country Club.
In addition to promoting travel and good relations between the two rival regions, the tournament helps promote Phuket as a premium, world-class centre for golf, said Vice President of Phuket Golf Association, Kijja Pongprapas.
Two teams of 15 players each were selected to represent each region, with an all-Thai team representing Pattaya and a mix of nationalities playing for Phuket. Joining Thai players are golfers from Korea, Taiwan, South Africa and England.
Tourism of Thailand regional director Sethapan Buddhani will open the tournament at 9.30am.
Each day players will compete in different formats, including Ryder, four-ball and single match play.
The awards ceremony and wrap party is on May 30.
Visiting players are staying at Royal Phuket City Hotel.
Khun Kijja said that about 100 people were already set to follow the tournament, and more are welcome to come and watch.
