Phuket Expat Suspended: Team Faces Crunch

Phuket Expat Suspended: Team Faces Crunch

Friday, October 5, 2012
PHUKET: Brazilian keeper Alonso Goleiro has been suspended by Phuket FC for ''undisciplined conduct,'' coach Anurak Srikerd said today.

Among the problems was Goleiro's disinclination to turn up to training on time, said the Phuket coach.

Goleiro's first match in the goals a couple of weeks back produced the 5-1 defeat that cost the job of Phuket's previous coach, Rong ''Noi'' Ajanyoot.

New coach Anurak pulled something of a masterstroke last weekend by playing novice keeper Kampon Patomaukakul.

The 20-year-old withstood every challenge thrown at him by Sriracha at the Phuket City ground until the 85th minute, when the winning goal was scored.

On Saturday night, Khun Kampon and the rest of the Phuket team face an even more difficult task than they did last week.

Lying in fourteenth spot, they will be taking on the second-placed team in Division One, Supaburi.

''Our expectations are tempered by reality,'' the coach might have said if we'd asked him for an appropriate quote.

''We will play hard and I will be happy with a draw,'' is what the Phuket coach actually told us today.

The goalkeeping position is the least of his concerns. The Phuket FC midfield has a larger hole in it than a poorly made doughnut.

Brazilian midfielder Marcio Santos has a sore foot and Yuthana Jongnok and Wanmhai Sethanant are both out, sick.

Suspension also means that Wuttipong Sittitanyakit won't be playing. Things could have been worse.

Captain Watcharapong Jun -ngam, who flipped his car on the way home after last weekend's game but walked away uninjured, appears certain to play.

A real train wreck, though, is difficult not to contemplate when a depleted and lowly side comes up against one of the top teams in the competition.

The relegation trapdoor beckons. Phuket must soar to all the way to thirteenth spot or it's back to Division Two next season.

The run home will be rugged, with just four games remaining after Saturday's away match. Go Phuket!
