PHUKET is celebrating the efforts of two women who bravely defended the island from invading Burmese with its annual Tao Thepkrassatri-Tao Srisunthorn festival, starting with a large ordination ceremony at Wat Lattiwarnaram in Phuket City on March 7.
The Heroines' Monument, on a roundabout between the airport and Phuket City, honors the clever battle tactics of sisters Lady Chan and Lady Mook.
Their elevated statues are now a popular merit-making site for local residents and visiting Thais. King Rama I bestowed the women with the titles Thao Thepkrassatri and Thao Srisunthorn soon after the battle, a scene depicted at Thalang Museum, just east of the monument.
The fun fair features colorful stage shows, tours, sports activities and food stalls at several sites near the monument.
Festivities are being organised by the Phuket OrBorJor, Rajabhat University and Phuket Local Administration Organization.
