PHUKET: The Festival of the Two Heroines began today on Phuket with celebrations lasting through until March15. Nightly shows begin on March 13.
Phuket's two sister heroines are celebrated all year long in their central Phuket monument at a busy roundabout but the annual festival brings them to life.
The sisters fought off a Burmese invasion and, while the Burmese kept on coming, the bravery of the two women is what Phuket cares to remember best.
This year's festival promises to be better than its predecessors, with initiation ceremonies for Buddhist monks highlighting the religious aspect of the first three days.
On March 4, there's a cross country bike race beginning from the memorial at 9am.
Other notable events are as follows:
March 11: 6am, minimarathon; 8.30pm, Thai boxing competition

Oh the old one about the two women defeating an army! Check the real history of why the Burmese left, not the indoctrinated Thai teachings.

Every nation turns historic defeats into heroic near-victories, Jimmy. Thailand is blessed by not needing memorials to mark the needless loss of millions of young men and women in wars.
