PHUKET: Logos Hope, a kind of Noah's Ark for book-lovers, will finally dock on Phuket next month with its cargo of refernce works and page-turners. It has been a while coming.
The vessel was due a couple of years ago, but needed extra maintenance in Singapore so the Phuket chapter was never written.
From August 17 to 27, Phuket folk should finally get to wander the passageway aisles of this floating data base when the Logos Hope arrives from Sweden, via India.
It's a unique vessel, crewed and staffed by about 400 volunteers who pay around 200,000 baht for the privilege. Although there's only one Thai on board, a variety of other languages can be spoken and Logos Hope is filled with volumes that cover more than 1000 classifications.
The tendency is towards reference books, with maps and some souvenirs on offer as well. If books are what you fancy at sea, then best start practicing your browsing technique now.
School groups and tour groups are advised to contact the project manager, Brazilian Heverton Muniz, in advance. He's at heverton.muniz@gbaships.org
Hours of opening will be 10am-5pm Tuesdays to Saturdays, and 2pm-9pm Sunday to Mondays. A small fee is likely to be asked for entry on board.
Volunteers may need to be warned that the local taxis at Phuket's deep sea port are quite a bit more expensive than the cost of entry.
