Phuket Local Food Festival will feature dozens of Phuket dishes and snacks

Phuket Food Festival Set to be World's Spiciest

PHUKET local food and good health will be highlighted in the local food festival in Saphan Hin, Phuket City, that runs from January 20-24.

The festival is being organized by the Phuket OrBorJor, to introduce local food to tourists and offer those suffering through the economic slowdown a chance to earn some extra income.

A giant bowl of chili paste will be created at the opening ceremony with the aim of getting into the record books as the world's largest.

Information on the government program 'Clean Food Good Taste' for restaurants and food vendors will be available.

Local food demonstrations and many booths selling local specialties are among the highlights.

Cultural performances featuring Thai 'famous super stars' and students, a lady-boy contest and shows organized by various government sections will also be staged.

Thai Tourism Minister Chumpol Silpa-acha and Dr Narongsak Ankkasuwapla, Director-General Department of Health, will preside over the festival.

January 20

5pm Opening ceremony with the making of the 'world's largest' bowl of chili paste namprik kha-yam. Government ministers including Governor Dr Preecha Ruangjan and OrBorJor President Paiboon Upatising will roll up their sleeves to help with the mixing.

7pm-10pm Local food tasting at several booths and stage shows including a Miss Phuket contest.

3-11pm Local food booths set up by housewife groups and fruit carving demonstrations, exhibitions of OrBorJor and 'Clean Food Good Taste' programs.

January 21

3-11pm Local food booths set up by housewife groups and Phuket somtam making demonstrations.

7.30-10pm Stage shows with students from local schools.

January 22

3-11pm Local food booths set up by housewife groups and Phuket khanom lar making demonstrations.

7.30-10pm Student stage shows.
January 23

3-11pm Local food booths and rice cooking demonstrations.

7.30-10pm Student stage shows and a Mit Jamlang ladyboy contest.

January 24

3-11pm Local food booths and ice carving demonstrations.

7.30-10pm Student stage shows and a Mit Jamlang ladyboy contest.
