SWIMWEAR, sportswear, lingerie . . . Phuket is getting geared up to become the fashion capital of the world for a week. And it will be time to party, too.
The bold plan to ignite the island's tourism torch comes with Phuket International Fashion Week & Music Festival, from June 24-30 at Jungceylon, Patong's upmarket shopping centre.
A total of 27 brands will take part in 21 shows, along with 200 models and some of Thailand's top performers in daily after-parade concerts. And don't forget those parties.
Announced at a media preview that demonstrated some of the attitude and attributes of several top models as well as the island, the fashion festival promises much excitement and fun . . .
Each day will bring a free afternoon catwalk parade from 2pm to 3pm, with the giant water spouts in Jungceylon's large open courtyard as a backdrop.
From 8pm to 10pm each evening there will be two brand catwalk showings, followed by a concert including some of Thailand's top bands and artists.
Later comes the after-show party, either at the White Box on the beach at Kalim or at Hollywood, in the heart of Patong.
Ticket-holders will be able to mix and mingle with models and performers, as well as the media. Fashion TV is expected to attend.
Prices vary depending on access required from 500 baht to 1500 baht, with week-long passes going for 3000 baht and 5000 baht.
It's hoped that the fashion blast will succeed to the point where it becomes a twice-yearly Phuket event.
About 600 extra resort rooms are expected to be occupied during the week on Phuket. The preview took place at the Millennium Resort Patong.
Tata Young is scheduled to perform on Friday.
