PHUKET: Phuket City's Saphan Hin public park is the setting for the first Phuket World Musiq Festival, to be celebrated nightly from December 2 to December 5.
It's an appropriately international and musical way to mark the 84th birthday of HM The King, a fine musician and composer.
Backing the festival is the Phuket Provincial Administrative Organisation, and chief executive Paiboon Upatising, who enjoys singing himself, hopes that the concert series will bring overseas and locals in large numbers to enjoy what should be a spectacular four-night gig.
Phuket City's Saphan Hin park is the spot where many of Phuket's traditional festivals are held, but the Phuket World Musiq Festival is likely to prove a drawcard with international visitors from 5.30pm to midnight.
''Phuket is already host to many international sporting and cultural events and this festival adds to that multicultural and cosmopolitan environment,'' Khun Paiboon said.
World music has enabled people with a liking for all styles and approaches to become more familiar with musicians and music from less well-known parts.
Organiser Todd ''Tongdee'' Lavelle hopes to generate sufficient interest to make the Phuket World Musiq festival a regular part of Phuket's increasingly packed lineup of annual events.
''It is the shared vision of Khun Paiboon and the people of Phuket to bring together locals and foreign guests in a truly 'borderless event,''' he said.
''We hope this will be the beginning.''
Some of the biggest names in world music will be performing, including Hassan Hakmoun, a renowned artist and performer from Morocco, and Americana from the US. Joining them will be local and national performers.
Most importantly, the Phuket World Musiq Festival follows the three Fs of Phuket festivals: it's fun, it's free, and there will be plenty of food. Details are at www.phuketworldmusiq.com
