Mysteries of Phuket's past are revealed at the Kathu Carnival

Phuket Celebrates Phuket Culture at the Kathu Carnival

Thursday, July 26, 2012
PHUKET: There are those who say Phuket has a proud and distinct culture and there are those who do something about it.

The people organising the Kathu Carnival do something about it, and on past performances, do a great job.

The annual celebration of all things Phuket returns on August 4-6, in the central part of Phuket where the more illustrious annual Vegetarian Festival is reported to have had its beginnings.

This year's Phuket revival of all things traditional begins with a street parade at 5.30pm on August 4 in Vichitsongkram Road at the Kathu market, not far from the historic Chinese Shrine.

Over the next three nights, a range of cultural and kitchen treats will be in store for about 5000 people who are expected to attend.

Phuket food does not get any more authentic. There's local vegetarian food to taste, too.

Classic cars, a martial arts display, a tin mine show and several exhibitions highlighting the way life used to be once on Phuket are among the attractions.

People who have been to past festivals are determined to go back this year, a sure sign that Phuket has a past worth reliving.
