Some 600 people already turned up this morning (May 28) to clean the beach in Patong, and a second day of cleaning in Patong City in the area around Jungceylon is scheduled to start at 9am on May 29, he said.
PHUKET beaches in 20 locations across the island will be swept and scoured in big cleanup on May 28 starting at 4pm.
In an initiative called "Clean Phuket Day", volunteers are encouraged to join the cleaning at Mai Khao, Nai Thon, Bang Tao, Surin, Kalim, Patong, Kata, Nai Harn, Ya Nui, Rawai and Panwa beaches.
Several Phuket resorts including the JW Marriott, Anantara, Sala Phuket, West Sands, Mom Tri's Boathouse, Kata Beach Resort and Club Med are supporting the program.
Cleaning stations will be set up in a number of locations along the beaches, with a supply of garbage bags, water and soft drinks for volunteers.
About 250 volunteers are expected to join the cleanup at Mai Khao Beach alone.
In case of bad weather, the cleanup will be postponed to Friday, May 29 at 4pm.
Organisers are inviting people who join the cleanup to send in photos and ideas for future environmental projects.

We just returned from our sixth holiday in Phuket and realised the need for education and more bins years ago. We would help if we were there! Congratulations to those responsible for this initiative!
