PHUKANA PUB opened over the weekend, adding some nightlife to Phuket City, which often struggles to keep its eyes open after 10pm.
The island's capital may not rival Patong for entertainment of a different kind, but at least the sophisticated options are improving with Phukana's doors open.
It's described as a Cool Gang Hang Out, a remake of the Phukana Wine & Drink, and it can be found in Maeluan Road, not far up the hill from the intersection with Yaowarat Road.
The target audience is university students and young workers who want to mingle and mix and maybe make new friends over some music.
Two bands will be playing every night from 8.30pm, which is a good start, with the party continuing until 1am.
Wednesdays, and the microphone is all yours if you want it.
Indy pop, acoustic jazz and easy listening are on the music menu with pub snacks to help digest the cool sounds.
Prices sound reasonable, with the opening promotions including a mixer for 35 baht.
There's no corkage on liquor or wine you bring.
Outside, the atmosphere is quieter and you have the chance to talk to new-found friends or old acquaintances, and actually be heard.
There's parking for the first 15 cars, and doors open at 6.30pm each night.
