Inside Paula's, temptations abound

Paula's Retro Cafe, Surin

Friday, January 11, 2008
Open: From 8am daily for breakfast and lunch

Address: The row of retail shopfronts back from Surin beach, opposite the park.

Style: Fresh-food cafe with a touch of class.

Price range: Reasonable. A smoked salmon, cream cheese bagel will set you back 195 baht, a veggie quiche, 190 baht.

Specialty: Cafe-style snacks and a comprehensive Breakfast Works available any time that will keep you going for hours for 250 baht.

What Phuketwan says: Several people recommended Paula's Retro Cafe. It's not a large place. There's space for about a dozen people indoors and the same number on the balcony. What we did notice when we visited was how many people came in smiling and left the same way. It's a convivial place where friends meet for a chat over good food and coffee. A grilled ham and cheese sandwich costs 180 baht, a glass of chardonnay or merlot comes for 150 baht, and most lunchtime customers could bargain on spending 250 baht. Dessert of NY cheesecake, carrot cake or a brownie may take you over your calorie limit for the day. Just one won't hurt.

How to find it: Surin's back-of-the-beach road to Bangtao, downhill from Twin Palms and the Chava apartments.

Parking: One big headache. Parking is at a premium around this neck of the woods. There is one off-road car park uphill on the left, coming from Kamala, requiring a downhill stroll to Paula's.
