Seafood with space to spare: the specialty at Laemhin

Laemhin Seafood, Sapham Pier

Thursday, May 15, 2008
Best Restaurant of 2008 contender

Telephone: 076 239357

Open: 10am-10pm daily

Address: Laemhin, Sapham Pier

Style: Thai

Price range: Reasonable. In the range of 90 baht to 120 baht for local seafood dishes. Hard to go wrong. There's a double price per dish in many cases so two people can share.

Specialty: Seafood, seafood and seafood. Big groups catered for with large spreads of seafood, seafood, seafood.

What the manager says: Fish, crab and other kinds of seafood are what we do best.

What Phuketwan says: Laemhin Seafood is a great place to go to take visitors who have just stepped off the plane and want to plunge into the Phuket seafood, if not the ocean. The shorebound restaurant by the pier is usually a busy place because over the years, the word has spread about the delights to be found here. The service is good and the supply of local seafood dishes seems endless. Even more fun is the option of taking a quick longtail ride out to one of several floating restaurants. This is an ideal way to spend a cool afternoon, especially sharing with a group of friends. It's always a matter of endless wonder that this eccentric delight is available within 20 minutes of central Phuket City. Large groups of locals visit, so the food can be relied upon to be up to standard.

How to find it: On Thepkasattri Road, take the road for Phuket City, keep going past the Bypass tee-junction, then look for Wat Sapham on a rise up a hill. The turn to Laemhin is the next on the left. Follow the winding road through the Muslim village to the pier. From Phuket City, go down the hill then make a U-turn back up past Wat Sapham.

Parking: Often a bit crowded but there's usually space in the car park to the right or on the road for one more.
