Judge Jules: Is Phuket hip enough to gain more gigs?

Judge Jules to set DJ Rules on Phuket

Monday, January 12, 2009
ON THE HEELS of the Kate Moss visit this month, Phuket is set to welcome another British celebrity to its shores.

World renowned DJ Judge Jules will be playing at Seduction Discotheque in Patong this Thursday, starting at 10pm.

His debut show in Phuket last year was packed, and sold more tickets than the Little Louis Vega show at the same venue, says a Seduction spokesman.

Tickets are 700 baht, and will be available at the door.

From 1997 to 2006 Jules was listed in the top 20 in DJ Mag's ''Top 100 DJs'' poll. His weekend summer Ibiza gigs, known as Judgement Sundays, are legendary.

Jules writes on his website judgejules.net that he is a big fan of Thailand.

''I love Thailand for many reasons: the unfettered friendliness of the people, the sympathetic lack of over-development, the tropical backdrop, and of course the irresistible food.

''The only unsavoury aspect is rampant prostitution. Every internal and international Thai flight I've caught has been full of old men travelling on their own.

''Whilst some might have a genuine reason to be there, the sight of an old Western guy on a scooter with a Thai girl is an every minute occurrence.''

Jules mentions that compared to Koh Samui, Phuket's DJ club scene is underdeveloped.

He writes, ''Back in Jan 2006 we'd been booked and ready to visit Phuket for the first time, but the Asian tsunami forced us to change our plans, so the gig on Wednesday 16th of Jan [2008] was a first visit to the island.

''To put things into perspective Samui has 1.5 million tourists per year as compared to Phuket's 5 million, but the Phuket clubbing market is much more in its infancy.

''In fact (to the promoter's knowledge) I was only the second major international dj to hit the island (after a recent set from New York's Little Louie Vega.)

''The crowd was a mixed international bag (surely I can describe things better . . . ) The dj booth was located dead in the centre of the dancefloor, and I spent 30 minutes before my set posing for one photo after the next, with what little camera friendliness I have tumbling uncontrollably into ugliness with each passing shot and additional vodka.

''I always feel a little paranoid with the crowd situated 360 degrees around me when dj-ing. Perhaps I should rein in the paranoia, but on a past occasion I caught someone stealing one of my records 180 degrees behind me in a similar situation (ironically at my own Judgement Sundays night in Eden Ibiza.)

''Overall I had a great night in Phuket, and I'm sure it won't be my last visit.''

Judge Jules is also scheduled to play in Pattaya and Bangkok during his Thailand visit.
