RUNNING on various dates at various locations from March 1 to March 15, the Heroine's Festival moves around the island for different events in celebration of the fighting sisters, Thepkasattri and Srisoonthorn.
March 1: Events begin at 7am on March 1 with a head-shaving ceremony for novice monks at Wat Lattiwanaram, also known locally as Wat Tai, in Chalong. Lunch at 11am comes in the form of merit-making donations from Buddhists. At 1pm, the novice monks are dressed in robes, ready for their new spiritual beginning.
March 8 daily until March 12: A historic tour around Thalang from 9am, taking in Thalang National Museum, Wat Pranangsang nearby, the heroine's own house, Wat Prathong, and the Thalang monument that marks the spot where the sisters defeated the Burmese invaders.
March 9: Sports Day in Thalang. Spectators can take in takraw, the Thai kicking form of volleyball, Sea boxing, in which Thai kickboxers battle it out with the loser plunging into the water, tug-of-war and sack races. In the evening, a schedule of Thai boxing bouts starts from 8.30pm.
March 12: Ancestors are honored from 8am at Wat Muangkomarapat, in Thalang. Merit-making is followed at 11am by lunch for the monks. At 5pm, tributes to the ancestors begin in a formal ceremony.
March 13: Between 7.30am and 8.30am, flowers are presented to mark the debt owed to the fighting sisters, at the Heroine's Monument. A ceremony follows at 9am.
March 13 to March 15: Nightly from 7pm at the Thalang Monument, a light and sound show celebrates the sisters' deeds.
