''Earth Day is the first holy day which transcends all national borders, yet preserves all geographical integrities, spans mountains and oceans and time belts, and yet brings people all over the world into one resonating accord . . . ''
(Margaret Mead, 1978, as quoted by Wild Asia 2009)
MARGARET MEAD, a noted anthropologist, worked among South Pacific islanders and a biography revealed another of her great lines.
She once stepped into an elevator in New York, sniffed the air, and said: ''Someone in this elevator has just had sex.''
Who blushed, we wonder?
Mead certainly had her moments, and her holy days, and on April 22 considerable effort will be made on Phuket to help respect the planet for Earth Day.
If you are not in an elevator somewhere, Scuba Cat Diving and Kontiki would love you to join their clean-up exercises on and around Phuket.
Scuba Cat Diving will be holding a Big Tidy along Patong beach from 1pm this Wednesday and Starbucks have promised a free drink to everyone who participates, says organiser Kath Ridley.
''Just meet at Scuba Cat on beach road shortly before 1pm,'' she says.
Scuba Cat also hopes to find divers who are keen to go down twice off Raya/Racha Yai on Wednesday, clearing rubbish that is likely to be mostly fishing nets.
''We are hoping certified divers will come and join us,'' she said. ''The cost is a minimal 1500 baht with equipment, food and transfers thrown in.
''We are looking for starters, and hoping to do our bit. Participants will make two dives.
''Kontiki is doing the same off Coral Island, where the area straight off the beach is clean but there is a lot that could be cleaner nearby.''
Margaret Mead would be diving if she could, but she has a previous engagement.
