PLENTY of people seem to still have money to spend on cars, judging by the amount of attention being lavished on vehicles at the Andaman Motor Show today.
Organisers were pleased with the numbers who turned up, despite price tags that left some onlookers calculating that they could build a home for the entire family as an alternative.
The show runs until December 11 on the ground floor at Central Festival.
Vice Governor Vorapoj Rattaseema, who opened the show, said that last year, 5000 to 6000 new cars were registered on Phuket, indicating the high income and buying capacity of Phuket people.
He said the spending power of the island's earners was in the top 10 provinces, and rising.
He acknowledged that there was some resentment against people who bought new cars, as indicated by the way new models were sometimes ''keyed'' in the streets.
On display at the show are 16 models from Lexus, Proton, Honda, Mitsubishi, BMW and Volvo. Ten models are available to test-drive.
