What Phuketwan says: We keep trying to find places that are out of the way without being hard to reach. We thought that the restaurant at Ao Sane beach near Nai Harn was intriguing, being accessed on a road that runs through the grounds of a large resort. Then we discovered the By The Sea Bar. This is one beach beyond Ao Sane, and just that little bit more remote. It's also that little bit more fun to go over a rickety bridge then descend to a small beach that, if you are fortunate enough, you might even have all to yourself. That was the case on the sunny day we went for lunch. It's a delightful spot, which has been operating since 2004. There's a bar and a menu and a staffer from the Baan Krating who can place your order over the telephone as soon as you have made a selection. The menu is a bright mix of Thai favorites and Western selections. From then, it's just a matter of waiting for staff to bring the meal down the steps to you. There are also some sun loungers available and it's possible to pretend that the small but delightful beach is all yours. The villas at Baan Krating and the basic shoreline bungalows at Ao Sane are about as remote as you can get by the beach on Phuket.
How to find it: Turn in through the gates of the Royal Phuket Yacht Club at the northern end of Nai Harn beach, follow the winding track through the property, under a building and out the other side, drive along past Ao Sane, then cross a bridge that is usually manned by a security guard into Baan Krating. Find a parking spot, then descend to the beach.
Parking: A few spaces in Baan Krating, more by Ao Sane if you don't mind a short uphill walk.
